When Would I Need a Second Maintained Supply?
A maintained supply is always needed for mechanical smoke control systems. These life safety systems require a secondary mains supply in case of primary mains failure. This may be from a generator, a UPS (and rarely these days a second mains supply). These second maintained supplies may be shared with other emergency equipment, but in residential buildings and smaller commercial buildings this is often not the case.
An Uninterruptible Power Supply is used to protect critical loads from mains supply problems including complete power failures using a dedicated battery. They can be used for the purpose of ‘bridging the gap’ whilst a standby generator is started and synchronised. UPS Systems need to be housed within a building with a clean temperature controlled environment.
